About the Foam Geek

Who is Foam Geek Cosplay?

I am a relatively new cosplayer living in the Hampton Roads, Virginia area.  Along with my wife, daughter, and son, the 4 of us have started to attend local conventions in costume in the Hampton Roads and Richmond area.  In the future we may even expand to D.C. or North Carolina conventions.  Although I have used worbla, resin, and other materials for making props and costumes, my favorite material is foam.

Cosplay History:

As someone who made costumes and props for local Halloween shows, I started to do research into making costumes and props.  I discovered more about Cosplay from attending local conventions and the TV show “Heroes of Cosplay.”  After attending a convention in Richmond with my family, I asked my son if he was interested in doing a costume.  Since he was a huge fan of LEGOs we decided to make a LEGO Batman costume.  In July of 2014, my son debuted his first LEGO Batman costume at a local celebration of Batman day.

By early 2015, we had already planned out new LEGO costumes for my son and myself.  In February of 2015, he debuted his LEGO Boba Fett costume.  The LEGO Boba Fett costume had improved (bendable) legs and a much better looking helmet.  Since he had grown a little and already had grey legs from the Boba Fett costume, we created a new Batman helmet and torso.

During this time, my daughter had started to experiment with making costumes of her favorite Anime and Homestuck characters.  I’ve assisted her in making a whip prop for a Fairy Tale character and foam horns for her Homestuck characters.

While I do enjoy building the costumes, I decided for Tidewater Comicon I would make a matching costume to wear with my son.  The May 2015 show was the debut of the LEGO Jango Fett costume and my first personal adventure into cosplay.  We both had a blast and it was great walking around the convention floor with my son.

Later in the summer we got a little more ambitious.  I created a LEGO Darth Vader costume for my son.  I also decided to get my wife and daughter involved.  Originally they were going to be matching Storm Troopers but due to issues with the helmets and unrealistic timetable, their costumes were not finished in time for Wizard World Richmond.  My son was able to debut his Vader costume and was definitely a hit.

In October we were able to do our first family cosplay.  This was my second costume.  The family included myself as LEGO Emperor Palpatine, my wife as a LEGO Storm Trooper, my daughter as a LEGO Imperial Trooper, and my son as LEGO Darth Vader.

Unfortunately due to illness our 2015 season was cut short.

Cosplay Future:

It’s the start of 2016 and already we have plans.  This year we are planning new non-LEGO costumes.  The big event for us will be the May 2016 Tidewater Comicon.
